The actress was known for her performances in films by Claude Lelouch, Federico Fellini, and Vittorio De Sica.

Anouk Aimée, the French actress who became an international sex symbol as the aloof, enigmatic, and sensual star of Claude Lelouch's "A Man and a Woman," has died at the age of 92.

Aimée was born Nicole Françoise Florence Dreyfus on April 27, 1932, in Paris. The daughter of actress Geneviève Sorya, she began her career as a child model and made her film debut at the age of 16 in "The Lovers of Verona" (1949).

She went on to star in more than 70 films, including "La Dolce Vita" (1960), "8½" (1963), and "The City of Women" (1980). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in "A Man and a Woman" (1966).

Aimée was known for her beauty, her intelligence, and her strong personality. She was a feminist and an advocate for social justice. She was also a passionate supporter of the arts and served on the board of directors of the Cannes Film Festival from 1992 to 1997.
